Ishii-san died #

by daigo in cult

Masaru Ishii, a great Japanese Rubyist, died at the rail disaster, where 106 people died. He introduced RubyUnit with the author1, Suketa-san. It was the predecessor of the current Test::Unit in Ruby 1.8.

I love unit testing. I pay his last respects. I don’t know what to say in English. I hope I don’t use incorrect words. I learned RubyUnit from Suketa-san’s book.

1 According to this blog, Ishii-san asked Suketa-san to create a Ruby implementation of xUnit.

Very sad news. Okuyami mousiagemasu.

Ah… indeed. Death touches us even here.

Daigo, your post was very respectful and very beautiful. Poor Ishii-san. How old was he?

said on

37 years old. Too young. He would contribute a lot to Ruby, Java and others. I feel very sad to see his home page working as if nothing happened…

Tragic news. May test/unit be used more frequently to honor his legacy.

It is indeed sad to look at his homepage and think it was written by a dead man. I think that drives home the fragility of life, to think of him writing this or that text on the page and that he had less than a year to live at that point in time… And to lose the life in circumstances out of his control.

Has the news been feed through to Ruby-Talk/Core yet?
